The hike to the small Lakes of Bombasel is one of the easiest around, suitable for kids, but one of the more scenic. The blue of the waters is enchanting.

Alpe Cermis is not only the local mountain of Cavalese, but also a popular hiking and skiing area. Once you have reached the Paion del Cermis, a panorama of incomparable beauty opens up. Not far away, nestled between the dark volcanic rocks of the Lagorai chain, there are the lovely, deep blue mountain lakes Bombasel.

Author’s recommendation

The lakes shores are ideal for picnic allowing kids to play throwing stones into the waters or just looking at the many fishes.

Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Turn-by-turn directions

Reach Paion del Cermis by using the two cablecars + one chairlift from Cavalese. Fiemme Guest Card’s owners can have a discount on the ride. From Paion del Cermis hut take the time to admire the wonderful panorama to the Dolomites of Val di Fassa (up to Sella and Marmolada), the Pale di San Martino, Corno Bianco, Corno Nero and Latemar. You can see also the Austrian Alps and the Dolomiti di Brenta at far distance.

After taking plenty of pictures it’s time to start the hike: with no relevant difficulties on a pretty flat slope, we reach Forcella Bombasel in 15 minutes.

From Forcella Bombasel, the hike gets harder: the pathway is rifted in rocks and it’s equipped by wooden stairs and a fixed steel rope to ease the walk. From here, the view stretches ahead to the rest of the route up to the Lakes of Bombasel (not yet visible at this point). The route keeps ascending but the gradient is never too hard (pay attention to the stony ground to avoid slipping, especially kids).

After a further thirty-minute walk, the way turns right and you can see the Castel di Bombasel not far from our destination: just a few steps now and we reach the Lakes of Bombasel.

For a wonderful view over the two lakes we recommend to walk up to Forcella del Macaco, along the pathway 353-L06. From the pass the view goes down surrounding the large Lake of Lagorai reachable in an hour.

To get back to Paion del Cermis hut just go back on the same route.
